Many from the Cynon Uchaf Ministry Area—especially St Elvan’s, St Winifred’s, and St Fagans—have journeyed to Walsingham on pilgrimage. But what makes Walsingham so special?
Located in Norfolk, Walsingham is one of Britain’s most significant pilgrimage sites. Once destroyed during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, it was lovingly restored between 1922 and 1938. Today, thousands visit each year to encounter God in this sacred “thin place”—where heaven and earth feel especially close.
England’s Nazareth: A Sacred Story
The Walsingham story begins in the 11th century with Richeldis de Faverches, a Saxon noblewoman known for her faith and generosity. In 1061, she received a vision from Mary, who showed her the house in Nazareth where Gabriel announced Jesus’ birth. Mary asked Richeldis to build a replica in Walsingham, and legend tells that the Holy House was miraculously constructed overnight as she prayed.
Her son Geoffrey later entrusted the Holy House to others, leading to the founding of a Priory. Royal patronage helped the Shrine flourish, with visits from kings including Henry III and Henry VIII—who ultimately ordered its destruction in 1538. Pilgrimage was revived in the 20th century and continues to thrive today.
Living the “Yes”

At the heart of Walsingham is Mary’s “Yes” to God—a willing acceptance of His call. Pilgrims are invited to echo that “Yes” in their own lives, not just during pilgrimage, but daily.
Since regular visits to Walsingham aren’t always practical, the Shrine encourages the formation of Cells of Our Lady of Walsingham—small groups that meet monthly to pray, support one another, and celebrate Marian festivals. These Cells help us live out our faith in community and devotion.
Join Us – 8th December at St Luke’s
We invite you to a Service for the Conception of Mary on 8th December at 7pm in St Luke’s Church. After the service, we’ll explore the possibility of starting a Walsingham Cell in Cynon Uchaf.
This is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your faith and support others in their Christian journey.
Come along and be part of our Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham.
