Labyrinth of Lights
On All Souls’ Day, 2 November, St John’s Churchyard in Aberdare will be transformed by a Labyrinth of Lights.
Open to all, the event provides a peaceful setting for prayer and for remembering loved ones lost recently or long ago as the darker months begin.
The Labyrinth will be lit for the All Souls service at St John’s at 4 pm on 2 November.
You can remember a loved one by dedicating a light in their memory.
Friends of Cynon Uchaf may dedicate lights free of charge. If you are not a friend, you can become a Friend here or donate towards a light.

What is a Labyrinth?
Unlike a maze, a labyrinth follows one winding route to the centre and back. Walking it creates time to remember loved ones and give thanks for their lives. Labyrinths appear in churches and outdoor spaces worldwide; a particularly famous example lies in Chartres Cathedral in France.
The tradition predates Chartres Cathedral and can be traced to some of humanity’s earliest cultures. Across the centuries, labyrinths have helped people slow down, reflect, and explore their relationship with God.
Praying as you walk
​Enter the labyrinth with a question or concern in mind, carrying it with you as you walk towards the centre. At Chartres, they say that the inward journey is compared to returning to the womb, bringing your burdens to the heart of all things.
As you follow the path outwards, imagine yourself renewed, leaving your worries behind at the centre. This silent form of prayer reaches beyond words, offering a way to encounter God and receive care beyond imagination.
Cynon Uchaf Labyrinth of LIghts
Ribbons and grave lights will outline the route through St John’s Churchyard. Every light may be dedicated to the memory of a loved one.
Following the All Souls service, all are welcome to walk the labyrinth in remembrance of those who have died. The glowing path is a reminder that light endures through the year’s darkest days. The journey offers a silent form of prayer: a chance to walk with God and receive his blessing.
